Glowrushes by Roberto Piumini Thursday 14th November 4.30 p.m. Jason - My toes tend to curl up in response to stories that are sentimental, sugary or involve nice people being generally nice to one another. So, I wouldn't have expected to like this story, about a sickly boy who in modern terms we would say was "allergic to the world" and has to live indoors away from the beauty and excitement of the wider world. His father commissions a great painter to come and stay with them and paint the outside world inside. But whether it's the brilliant writing, or the truthfulness of the book, I picked it up for a relaxing bedtime read and couldn't put it down until I finished it at 3 in the morning. I'm intrigued to see what book clubbers will make of it - is it a children's book for children, or one more for adults? Am I just turning into an old softie? It's a book about friendship, imagination, creativity and mortality that is sad and beautiful. In these sessions we talk about the book - there absolutely will be spoilers so don't come if you haven't read it. What did you think of the story, characters, writing? What were the big themes? Then we swap some recommendations for other stuff to read and get generally excited about books. These sessions are free, but do book on.
